Taher and I visited many of his family members that live in Cairo, and the conversations were held mainly in Arabic. I would sit and listen intently to the conversations being had, and there was one phrase I heard A LOT. Everytime someone would say something they would preface it with InshaAllah. Or when they were done saying something, they would say repeatedly, InshaAllah, InshaAllah. And everytime we would leave, I would say in english, "I hope to see you soon." And again, his relatives would say back to me in Arabic, InshaAllah. Just yesterday, I told Taher's aunt that we would like to have her over for dinner soon, and again, her response was InshaAllah.
My inquisitive mind asked Taher what exactly InshaAllah meant, and he explained to me that the translation means God Willing. (If Allah wills it) He said that in the Islam faith, there is an understanding that our lives are not our own, and nothing can be done if God is not willing. God has a plan for all of our lives and if something is in God's plan, than it will happen. I was raised in a Christian household, and Christianity also has the same understanding. Our lives are NOT our own. We are not in control of most things. It doesn't matter if you pray to Allah, Budda, or Jesus. The phrase InshaAllah fits perfectly, and quickly became a phrase that I use often in my life.
InshaAllah has pretty much become my mantra when speaking about our adoption plans.
I get asked. . . "You are going to adopt a child?" InshaAllah.
"How long will it take?" Hopefully not long, InshaAllah.
"Are you adopting a healthy child? InshaAllah.
Taher and I are working very hard on the aspects of this process we can control. When paperwork comes in, we fill it out quickly and accurately and send it back to the agency. We go to medical appointments for physicals, we go to the police station for fingerprinting.
But at the same time, I have this spiritual aspect of life that things will work out exactly how they're supposed to. If Taher and I are meant to be parents to an adoptive child, than God willing, that is what we'll be. If for some reason something happens that delays or prevents us from being adoptive parents, than I also need to trust that that is the master planning. In my journey of life, I've learned some brutal lessons. I've learned there are things I can control, but for the most part, I don't have control over a lot of life. I hope, I PRAY this adoption goes smoothly. I hope that all the work will pay off, and in the end, we will have a child. But I never want to be over confident. I always want to have faith that things will work out the way they are supposed to.
Taher and I will adopt a child. . . InshaAllah.

I couldn't agree with you more. Being the control freak that I am this was a learning process and a humbling experience to only have so much control. Ultimately things do happen for a reason and I have a lot more faith that although we have freewill, God has a plan for each and everyone of us. It's up to us to be open to it.
Now you need to pronounce some of the more throaty Arabic sounding words!
Leah - I loved this post! I too love learning about other languages and think it is so fascinating how language is completely intertwined with culture. We are so similar! Do you think we will get to meet someday? InshaAllah. :)
Emily - I truly hope we get to meet someday. :-D
I love this entry, and what a beautiful phrase. I will think of it often!
Because, at the end of the day, it is not in our control. God has your family perfectly planned in his timing and with the children that are supposed to be with you.
I promise you wouldn't want it any other way.
Love the post. Love the phrase ever since you taught it to me... has it really been 2 years?
:) Karyn
Karyn,
I was hoping you would read this post today. I know how much you love that saying. :-D And it will be 2 years in November! I really can't believe it!
Beautiful post!!!!
You are so right about this word; InshaAllah. We are powerless to so much, and when it is the will of God or the Universe, so it shall be. My belief is that even though we are powerless to aspects of what happens in our lives, if we are truly good people, then good shall come.
The child that comes to you will be the one that you are meant to raise, love and nurture. That will be true. InshaAllah.
Peace, love and joy to the two of you while on this amazing journey!!!
Learning that we aren't in control is a great lesson in life. It seems like once that lesson is learned and accepted, the rest falls in to place.

You are so right about things not being in our control with adoption.
I just wanted to wish you all the best. I just saw your comment on my blog, and I wanted to leave you one, too. Good luck with your journey. :)
Leah! Thanks for dropping by my blog! I LOVE this post! We just sent out our background checks and fingerprints...now we're waiting for our backgrounds to be cleared and for copies of our birth certificates to arrive so we can send them in. It's a lot of work, but honestly I don't think I would have it any other way! I am so used to the idea of adopting now, I can't imagine physically bearing a child! Good luck in your journey, I'm sure you'll be awesome parents!! P.S. I'm following you! :)
So very true.
Lisa
InshaAllah! I love it and it is so true.
How funny that we posted such similar things at the same time! I can totally relate to what you posted. Not having control is hard, but there is peace in knowing God has a plan. Great post.
Wow!! What a neat culture your little one will have!! I completely agree with you that the Lord has complete control over our lives! I feel like I am having to do deal with the Lord's plan and timing in my own life! I question and at times feel sorry for myself about certain things going on but essentially it's all up to His plan!!
I like that. And I pray you are able to hold on to that as the process continues. That InshaAllah your child will be in your arms sooner then you imagine.
Amazing pictures.
beautiful!
my grandma says "God willing..." all the time. I often think of that during rough times.
