I Know When My Son is Coming Home

Ever since beginning this adoption process, that has been the question we've been asked over and over again.

"When will you actually have your son home?"

If I had a dollar for every time I have been asked that, well, then this adoption would be completely paid for. :) And it's a great question, but one I've been unable to answer because of so many variables that go along with adoption.

But yesterday we received word from our agency that our embassy appointment. . the last and final appointment of this endeavor is September 30th!!!

We are so happy to finally know, and inshallah, that is when we can bring Khalil home! :)

As you know, I have decided to make this trip to Ethiopia, and my Mom is sweet and generous enough to make the journey with me, and T will be a single parent for the week I am gone. Our agency is suggesting we arrive either September 24th or September 25th, and the earliest we can then leave Ethiopia is the evening of October 1st. Ethiopia requires at least one week in the country when picking up the child. My plan of course was to go for the shortest amount of time possible, so we could get Khalil home, and so my time away from Scarlett was as limited as possible? Well, guess what? Minneapolis to Addis Ababa isn't the most popular flight, therefore, the flights are a bit limited. Right now, it's looking like I'll have to leave on a Friday, and come back on a Sunday. 9 days away from Scarlett. 9 days. My heart is breaking inside just a little.

I don't know how I can have so many emotions at once. I sit hear in excitement and anticipation to not only get to meet my son, but to get to bring him home. FINALLY!!! We will be a family of 4. I can't wait. Yet my emotions are also scared. When I say goodbye to Scarlett before my trip, I will not only be saying goodbye to her, but I'll be saying goodbye to her as my only child. Yes, I know I'm already a Mama to 2, but Scarlett is the only child in my custody at the moment. She is currently the center of my world. That will shift. Will the shift be okay with her? Is she just simply too young to care? I know people with multiple children say that the heart just grows even bigger with the addition of children. But can I give both Scarlett and Khalil the love and attention they deserve? Can I stomach being away from Scarlett for 9 days? Do I even have a choice? I had mentally prepared to be away from her for 5 days. But 9? Really? Will she know I'm still Mama when I am home? Or will she be looking at our nanny as her Mama? Am I completely irrational and going off the deep end? (Don't hesitate to tell me I am)

Life is really coming full circle for my family. We will have Khalil home either October 2nd or October 3rd, depending on the flight situation. Do you know what I was doing last October 2nd? I was flying to Ireland with T. A trip I booked to try to heal from the infertility mess that had become my life. A trip I booked to get away with my husband and heal from the thought of never having a biological child.

And here we are. . . it will be exactly a year later. Married. . . with 2 children. Makes me wish I had had more faith during the entire journey.

I can't imagine how incredibly stressful and bittersweet (I'm not sure if that is the right word...) this whole situation is for you, but I am SO glad that you finally know when your son is coming home. :) I can hardly believe it-- I feel like I've watched from the sidelines as this whole process (from horrible IVF to this!) has taken place and it is amazing. :) I'm so glad I could have been "part" of it and I can't wait for your whole family to be together!!!

Yay September 30th!!!

I think your daughter will be just fine. I am not too sure my girls are entirely aware of one another. Maybe a little? I think that comes with age.

I'm SO happy for you!

So glad you got the official date! Yay!!!!

I'm sure the whole thing is quite an adjustment - going from a couple to a family of 3 and then a family of 4 all within the same year.

Thanks for sharing all ofthis with us.

Leah,

I think you've had incredible FAITH during this journey :) You are completely normal and if you failed to have FAITH 24/7 none of us can blame you. Its been a long, hard road to success.

On a happy note, guess what??? Khalil's homecomeing coincides with my Anniversary, my 10 year anniversary! How very special to share this date with your little boy, whom I've come to love already.

Travel safely and take lots of pictures for us...video maybe?

Love to you
Andrea

He's coming home!!! Tears in my eyes after the post. I know it will be so hard to leave Scarlett but I think you'll be happy you did. Scarlett will know her Mama the moment you get home. Don't worry. It will all be wonderful (eventually). ;)

The days you spend in Africa with your son will be different from any you will have when you get home. The time will help you bond without interruption. Have a great trip and congratulations!

I love how this is turning out for you and I can only pray that something good will actually work out for us in the near future. I'm feeling pretty bummed lately! I'm excited for y'all though. That is a long time to be away from Scarlett, I think that I would be really emotional too! But it will be worth it when you have your two babies home!

congrats on bringing your son home! so exciting. we have to wait thru court closure for our court date in Nov and it feels like an eternity. Anyhow, your infant adoption was very fast. What agency did you use. Also, I was told that ET did not accept applications from pregnant women. Did you have to do special paper work since you found out you were pregnant with Scarlett early in the process? Just curious.
CONGRATS!

Hooray! That is wonderful news! I am so excited for you. :D :D :D

The time away from Scarlett is nothing in the eternal scheme of things. She will remember who you are when you come home, and she will always love you all the same. Everything will be fine.

Congrats on FINALLY getting a court date. :D

You are completely insane and over reacting.

And it's completely understandable!

If you were uber calm about this whole thing, I would wonder what shrink you were going to make an appointment with!

I hope his first day at HOME WITH HIS MOMMY, DADDY and SISTER is on October 3rd! That's my birthday and it would be amazing to think of him on that day!

Congratulations to you on having a date! I was thinking about you today, and the sheer logistics of juggling two babies. With three of my own, I know for sure the one thing you'll never have enough of is arms, which made me think of my lifesavers...my Moby Wrap that I used until my DS was about four months and my sling (I have a New Native carrier). If you haven't looked into it, I thought I'd plant the seed on investigating baby wearing. There are so many benefits....attachment and bonding, increased periods of quiet alert stage for baby, and two free hands for mom or dad to be able to get things done. I think with two little ones, it would be so helpful. When we are out and about, it's great to be able pop my fussy baby in the carrier, and being close keeps him happy enough to be able to get through the grocery store. Also, there are so many times when there isn't room for two babies in a cart, so wearing a baby works great. Something to think about while you're waiting...
