In a Perfect World

In a perfect world, adoptions wouldn't exist.

Mothers wouldn't die during childbirth. Nations wouldn't be impoverished. Children wouldn't get pregnant. There would never be a reason to adopt a child, because orphans wouldn't exist.

Unfortunately, we live in a very imperfect world.

According to a report I saw, there are over 143 million orphans in this world. 143 million. That is 1 in every 13th person. Every 2.2 seconds, a child becomes an orphan.

I don't take adoption lightly. I know how difficult this all may be for Nur when he grows up. I realize he may have an identity crisis. I realize he may have hard feelings that he was taken away from his beautiful country.

I also know what would happen to Nur and the 143 million orphans in the world if people didn't adopt these children.

And although I've said before that T and I are truly the blessed ones to have Nur as our son, I also take comfort in the fact that Nur will now have a home. He'll have two parents who love him unconditionally. He'll have a little sister who looks up to him and absolutely adores him. He'll have grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He'll have a roof over his head and food on the table. But mostly, he will have an immense amount of love.

The orphan crisis in this world is staggering. I know it's really going to hit me when I get to Ethiopia to bring Nur home, but see all of the other children at the orphanage being left behind. And who knows. Maybe I'll be back someday. I wouldn't discount that possibility.

And although I'm doing so little to help the orphan crisis in the world, I am happy to know that there will be one less.

I don't think your son is going to resent you bringing him to this country. He will grow up knowing that he is loved, that you cared enough to go halfway around the world to find him, and that you did everything in your power to give him the best life possible.

Leah,

You are doing SO much, never discount that :) You and T are opening your heart and lives to your son and I find that to be incredibly beautiful.

I just can't wait for you to hold him :) Sending lots of love and prayers your way.

Have you ever heard that saying, "To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world?" Well, you are that person to Khalil. He is blessed and fortunate beyond words to have you and T as his parents.

This has been on my mind since an interesting comment left on my blog. :)
The perfect world doesn't exist, but it will be the next best thing for our kids huh?

I sooo agree with you. I can't remember how I found your blog, but I am so glad I did. My husband and I just adopted and I could not sum it better. Our little one just made one month old. I am praying for you and your family. Khalil will love you. I had a few concerns because our son is african american and my husband is white. My husband loves our son so much. He said that our son will know that God is his Father and He is the one who brought us together. God Bless!

I just got back from the Together for Adoption conference and the number has actually increased to 164 million! It is unbelievable that there are so many children without parents in this world. The global orphan crisis is staggering. I am praying to figure out how I can do more. Thank you for making the issue known.

Good luck on your trip! I can't wait to hear about your first meeting with your son.
