So far, the adoption process has been going pretty smoothly. Sure, everything takes A LOT longer than I would expect it to take, but still everything has been straightforward and achievable.
Monday Taher and I had our first conference call with our referring agency who is located out of state. The conference call was with two employees of this agency, and Taher and I really liked them and we really feel like we chose the best agency for us.
The problem?
Taher and I are just about to start the adoption process involving the Dossier. This is a ton of paperwork (certified and notarized) that will eventually be sent to our country of choice for adoption, be translated, and allow Taher and I to adopt a child there. The paperwork involves medical history, financials, employment, etc. Anything something major changes, than our paperwork must be updated, and once again, the government will need to approve the updates.
Moving on.
The issue. The issue is that Taher is a contractor. There is the potential that his job could change at least a couple times before we brought the monkey home. He goes where the work is, so he can have a year long contract at one company, and then a 3 month contract at another, etc, etc. That means that we would need to update our paperwork, frequently, and what does this mean? DELAYS. I hate the word delay. The adoption process is long enough without having delays. I contacted our social worker yesterday to get her thoughts, and am waiting to hear back from her on what she thinks we should do. I can't believe we're the only household who adopted and one of the parents is a contractor? I mean, really?
Any of you adoptive parents out there deal with a similar situation or know someone who has?
And later today. . . our appointment with the Department of Homeland Security!

I love a good Homeland Security story. They can be interesting.
I don't really understand how his job might change to change your paperwork but is there not a way to just explain this change as a description of his job in the paperwork. Not only delays but more money in a lot of cases too. Hope the social worker can give you some good advice.
I also have no suggestions, but hopefully your social worker has had experience with this in the past and can give you helpful/encouraging info!
Ours was way different! However I totally understand, we went thur so much at times I thought it would be easier to just give up! I ended up quitting my job in the middle of all of our paper work so I could stay home with the baby when she was born and that screwed up everything!! Here I thought I was just doing something good! It opened up a whole can of worms!!

We had a similar issue and had to consult with our accountant to determine how to address it. In our case, because Hus-B receives a 1099 instead of a W-2, he is technically an independent contractor and considered self-employed even though he may work with or for a single company at any given time. I believe the homestudy/dossier requirements are slightly different for employment and income verification for self-employed people, and that might provide you with a way around the problem. Since my Hus-B worked with only one company for all of 2008 and still works for the same company, we did go ahead and ask the HR person at that company to write a short letter verifying that the income they reported on the 2008 1099 was accurate and that, since he is an independent contractor paid on a commission basis, his 2009 income was not ascertainable. I don't believe our letter added anything other than that we were still include an "employment letter" for the sake of formality.

That would be really frustrating. I wonder how much it could potentially add to your timeline? That blows. Good luck with Homeland Security. It sounds ominous. lol

Ugh! I am so sorry! That sucks! Can you possibly do the paperwork under just your income?
Argh. Hang in there. Sorry for the frustrations...and I had plenty of run ins with Homeland Security when I married my husband....always entertaining!
