Of course. . . my thought process has changed a bit since the news of the changes in Ethiopian adoption.
Yesterday was an emotionally difficult day. The policy change doesn't bother me, afterall, I truly believe the change is in the best interest of the children and that is the the most important thing. And if I wasn't nearly 6 months pregnant right now, I think I would have taken the news very differently. I may have moaned over the extra cost and the time away from work, I definitely would have moaned about how difficult it would be to leave my son and travel back to the states until my next trip, but the entire situation would have been far less complicated than it is now.
Ever since the adoption process started for T and I, we've been hoping the process went quickly. When we heard the average wait time until referral was 4-6 months, we hoped we'd be much closer to 4 months than 6 months. Now, our entire thought process has changed. Now we are actually hoping we don't get a referral until July at the earliest. That would give us time to give birth and make it to Ethiopia. Our agency still isn't 100% sure if both parents need to travel to court, and if both don't, than we our fine. Our agency also mentioned because of our special circumstances, perhaps something could be worked out. I'm holding onto hope that that is the case.
T and I spent much of our day yesterday explaining this new change to people. One person asked T why we didn't just cancel the adoption. I try not to let these comments go to my heart. Obviously anyone who would make that comment doesn't know anything about adoption. It's hard to explain to people that have no knowledge of adoption that I already am madly in love with this boy. Even though we haven't even been placed with a specific child, I love him. When I envision my family, there are two children. . . Khalil is there, and his baby sister. Cancelling the adoption IS NOT an adoption. It will NEVER be an option. I wish certain individuals in our life would realize how much this means to us. This adoption is just as important to us as my pregnancy. Imagine the loss I would feel if I lost the baby in my belly? Well, that is the same loss I would feel if we lost our referral. To me, suggesting that we cancel the adoption is just as painful as hearing why don't you just abort the baby. Seriously, it's the same thing to me. Both of these things are SO important to us. Times get tough. You don't just give up.
T said something very wise to me yesterday. He said that if our adoption is delayed, we'll end up with a different baby than we would have originally ended up with. But he said he is confident that whoever we end up with is the child that is MEANT for our family. I completely agree.
No one said international adoption would be easy. From the very beginning, our agency told us that things are always changing. And then getting pregnant during the process. . . we knew this would complicate our situation even further. But at the end of the day, T and I are ready for anything that will come our way. We are ready to be parents, and we are ready to fight for the right to be parents. We will be ready to fly to Ethiopia twice (or a million times) for our son. We would do anything for that little boy. We will somehow find a way to make this all work.
And a picture. To me, spring represents hope. Here is my front yard. Look at that! Grass!!! Okay, it's brown, dead, grass, but it's grass. Spring is just around the corner, and with spring, I feel renewed hope in everything.

You are so right! Nothing about adoption is easy. I really hope that the timeline works out for your family. And T is completely right - what ever happens - you will get the beautiful little boy that was meant for your family.
You sound pretty calm about the situation given everything that has been thrown at you in the last few days. Hang in there. Eventually all of this uncertainty will be over and you will have tow little ones to keep you busy.
I am so glad that you are taking the policy change in stride and remaining strong amidst all the (often inappropriate) questions. I am with you- when I picture your family it includes Khalil and your little girl! I know God will bring it to pass :)
it really frustrates me how people view adoption as an entirely different category from pregnancy, where really, those who are adopting know it's very similar emotionally. that's like telling you, why don't you just abort the baby? i'm praying your agency will be able to work something out with you. even if it's something like continuing to push you one number back on the list until your little girl is here, then keeping you next for a referral... you know, something like that... hopefully we'll all know more in the next week or two!
Jenny - That is the exact analogy I was thinking of. No one would EVER suggest that I abort this baby when times get tough. Yet people have no problem saying cancel the adoption. It is so frustrating to me, and I hope through this I'll be able to teach people that they are both important. Not one more than another.
It's so unthinkable that people expect you to just quit the adoption! Crazy. I do know one couple who has put their adoption on hold, though. They were very close to referral (within a couple of weeks, most likely) and know that they can't swing the two trips right now. So they're going to re-examine things and then get back on the list when they're feeling more secure. I'm thinking about you guys and hope everything works out in a way that is best for you. Hang in there.
I completely agree! People just don't understand adoption and how much your emotions and heart become invested in it, just like a pregnancy!
Sorry that people are suggesting that you cancel the adoption. Some people just don't know when to shut up. I hope everything works out for the best for your family.
I'm completely with you on this post. I've had a lot of folks ask me why we adopted internationally because "it just takes too long and there's too much involved". We have no idea who our son/daughter will be, but we already love them so much..our kids have already bonded with a sibling they have never even seen. I love your positive attitude and it will all work out in the end!!!
Gosh Leah. You have so much going on in your life. I will pray that everything works out for you. And please ignore people who don't understand. If they don't understand now that this baby is as much in your heart and soul as the baby you are carrying, they never will.

I meant to comment on your post yesterday....those are some big changes with the adoption process! Even though you know the adoption process is always changing, this is still quite the change! I am hopeful that maybe they can make an exception for you since you are pregnant. It would be hard to wait, and I know you are anxious to be able to adopt your baby boy. Wishing you well!! Heather
I heard about the change in procedure from another blog that I read and immediately thought of you. International adoption (domestic too, for that matter) if full of unknowns. We are adopting from a country that is in a state of flux too and we know that our son will come to us when it is time. I hope that you are able to determine that only one of you travelling is enough. I can't believe peopel would suggest that you just call off the adoption. That is crazy. They obviously don't know the hearts of adoptive parents.
There is a little baby boy out there that is meant to be part of your family. And one way or another, at some time in the near future, you will bring him home! I'm a big fan of HOPE :)
Is it the adult in me that says not to worry? We aren't in control so why fret?
I don't blame you at all for being upset at that comment. I would be too. I hope things work out. You're definitely in my thoughts and prayers. (((HUGS)))
I'll be praying that your agency work's something out for you! You will have the child that is meant for you. You just never know what happens while your traveling down that road but at the end will be your son! Hang in there!!
I agree with your husband...my husband and I struggled with getting pregnant for nine months, I could never understand why God was doing that to us, now, looking back, I know that He wanted us to have our daughter...she just wasn't ready yet...I couldn't imagine my life if I had gotten pregnant one month earlier or three months earlier or right away when we started trying, then, we would not have the sweetest most wonderful caring two year old we have now! I thank God for her every day and I think Him for making us wait...for HER...Your little boy is meant to be yours....the timing is going to work out to make that happen!
You say on here to leave questions that we might have and from time to time, you will answer them. I have a question. When deciding to adopt, what made you chose a son? Looking back, I feel that perhaps your choice for choosing a son, for whatever your reason, was again...a part of your life that was decided, you just didn't know it. Because now, you will get to experience both a boy and a girl...
My jaw about dropped to the floor reading that someone said to you to drop the adoption. That makes me a bit sick to my stomach.
I believe that everything will work out perfectly for you and T! The agency I'm sure will work with both of you threw the pregnancy and adoption time line. You are so blessed Leah :)
Wow, I am so sorry somebody made that comment to you. :(
You are doing an amazing job waiting for your son, even amidst these changes. I know he will be in your arms at just the right time....although the wait must be agonizing!
I am confident that all of this will work out for you and you will get the sweet little boy God has picked out just for you and T. I know all of this is so frustrating and people's thoughtless comments definitely do not help. Hang in there, girl!
Oh honey... I'm sorry this isnt going as planned... And I'm sorry for the insensitive, ignorant comments you've gotten from people. It will work out; I know it will. God provides!
